I refused to budge, I offered them payment by Credit Card & PayPal each of which they could not accept. They suggested one or two other ways I could pay each of which I would incur heavy bank charges. Time to phone them, and here came another problem they are unable to accept non US credit cards over the phone. Entered my Hertz rental agreement number and proceeded to pay the $19.50 by my Visa card, here comes the "con", right at the end of the process the dollar sign changed to a pound sign - I was about to be charged £19.50 not $19.50. The bill needed paying so I went on line and keyed in the Plate Pass web site. Couldn't really argue about it as I had used it and that was that. I was kicking myself but I had made the mistake of using Plate Pass and that was that. That's £17.50 plate pass service charge and the $2 for the tolls. ![]() I received an invoice from Plate Pass this week for $19.50. In fact they were the only times I used Plate Pass, 2 x one dollar tolls. I thought that was easy I'll use it again. Didn't really think a lot more of it until we were heading towards a toll booth and my son pulled out the slide on the unit fixed to the windscreen and directed me through the Ezpass channel. I had seen the signs in the Hertz office at Logan Airport, Boston but declinned the offer to subscribe to Plate Pass (EzPass). I also got caught by Plate Pass in a Hertz rental vehicle in New England. remove the vehicle from your account and deal with service fees from PlatePass, rental car companies or other toll management vendors. leave the car registered to your account until the missed toll(s) can be processed as video tolls - and possibly get charged for more tolls incurred by the next user(s) of the car - orĢ. Why they can't check the vehicle registration AT THE TIME of the misread toll confounds me.įinal lesson: if you experience a misread toll with your I-PASS/EZPASS with a registered rental car you have two options:ġ. Since I removed the vehicle from my I-PASS account once I returned the car, this is what occurred. If the vehicle is not registered to the I-PASS account AT THAT TIME, a bill/violation will be sent to the owner of the car (in the case of a rental car company this would be the company or its toll management vendor). I'm posting this as a warning to anyone who might decide to use their own I-PASS/EZPASS transponder with a rental car.Ī representative of the Illinois Tollway has informed me that video tolling often takes place 7-10 days after the misread toll. This is clearly untrue, since even a correctly registered vehicle may be subject to billing by third party companies when a rental car is involved. In the case of an unsuccessful toll transaction using the I-PASS, an unregistered vehicle will be subject to toll violations and fines." You must register any vehicle using the transponder to the I-PASS account. "Can I use my I-PASS in multiple vehicles? In a rental car? The Illinois Tollway clearly states in the I-PASS FAQ: On top of it there's not a thing I can do about it. What upsets me most is that PlatePass obviously has an agreement in place with the Illinois Tollway that gives them billing priority over MY I-PASS account when it comes to video tolls. I have rented other vehicles from Hertz with a PlatePass transponder and I have simply kept the little box on the windshield closed to prevent it from being read. He said he had seen Hertz cars equipped with I-PASS/EZPASS transponders and, if that was the case, the terms were spelled out. Since I had tossed the rental agreement, I spoke with the rental office and was told by the branch manager that the agreement contains nothing about PlatePass. ![]() Instead I later received a charge from PlatePass on the credit card I used for the car rental for $10.80 (80 cents for the toll and a service fee of $2.50/day times 4 days - the full length of the rental). Since the car was properly registered, I expected the toll to show up later as a video toll (vToll) and that to be the end of story. The car I rented was not equipped with any other transponder and displayed no logos or information about any toll payment service.Īfter my trip was complete I noticed that all of the tolls registered correctly, save one near O'Hare. ![]() I brought my own I-PASS transponder along for the trip, and prior to entering Illinois, I properly mounted the transponder, went to the Tollway website, and registered the rental car to my I-PASS account. I recently rented a car from Hertz in Minnesota and drove through Chicago en route to Michigan. ![]() It means you used your income to pay your bills and save money. Because of their shorter barrel lengths, compact and subcompact handguns may sometimes require a bit more patience when new owners first fire them. It's controllable and not excessively "snappy”, and it delivers more on-target accuracy, especially for a gun its size. The Glock 26 fires its 9mm cartridges with minimal recoil. Even though the Glock 26 is slightly thicker in comparison to the Glock 43, it is hardly a deal-breaker in any way. Of course, the tradeoff for more rounds is often that the gun itself will be a little fatter or thicker or bulkier. Not surprisingly, LEOs also like having more rounds in their firearms, even when they're intended solely for backup purposes, which is one reason why the G26 holds ten cartridges. Because it takes a double-stack magazine, which is necessary to hold ten cartridges, the Glock 26 is a little thicker than the Glock 43. The 9mm Glock 26 is popular amongst police officers as a backup gun and is often carried in an ankle holster. ![]() Law enforcement officers (LEOs) think tactically by nature. This "Baby Glock's" diminutive, subcompact size makes it an ideal choice for any concealed carry preferences a gun owner may have. It was purpose-built by the Austrian gun manufacturer to be highly concealable. Glock first released its striker-fired, semi-automatic G26 model in 1994. Keep in mind that the G43 also can't handle the G43X's 10-round higher-capacity magazine because it's a bit too thick. Plus, there's no Picatinny rail capability, limiting the kinds of accessories that can attach to this Glock. The handgrip on the Glock 43 might also benefit from a bit more stippling to allow for a more confident and firmer grip. Larger fingers may find that guard to be a bit uncomfortable after extended time spent within it. If there are any real cons to the G43, one might be its trigger guard. Discerning Glock owners looking for a little more "tacticool" won't be displeased by the Glock 43. However, just because it's simpler and more streamlined doesn't mean you can't fit a G43 with various aftermarket accessories. Since its 2015 introduction, Glock has eliminated unnecessary levers on the pistol's frame to make the G43 simpler to operate and more streamlined in appearance. Its lightweight, narrow frame makes it easier for smaller hands to hold and capably handle. Pros of the Glock 43 include a single-stack, which makes it thinner than the G26, and it's also highly concealable. ![]() The G43 also comes with a six-round flush-fitting magazine and a 7-round pinky-extension magazine for larger hands needing a more comfortable grip. The small Glock 43 is comfortable and great for deep carry, such as in a pants pocket or hidden in recessed areas on a body. This handgun comes standard with a slide that's narrower than other competing 9mm subcompacts, making the pistol very thin and extremely easy to conceal. Glock 43s also maintain the Austrian gun maker's reputation for reliability and durability. The G43 is also one of the smallest and lightest single-stack handguns found in the 9mm semiautomatic subcompact gun family. The Glock 43, high-quality subcompact pistol, was first introduced in 2015. ![]() ![]() Monroe said that fundamental to the program's success are the twin ideas that students learn the most and learn to write best by engaging what most interests them, and that writing is most effectively conceived not as a mere tool or skill, but as a learning activity bound up with and inseparable from the specific contents, activities and habits of thought and inquiry particular to specific disciplines. In 1999, some 3,800 Cornell students enrolled in classes associated with the Knight Program. Initially intended as a one-time memorial grant, the foundation was so pleased with the success of the program that it made additional grants over the years and asked Cornell to develop a national program. Knight Program originally was created at Cornell in 1986 with a $5 million grant from the Knight Foundation in the memory of founder and Cornell alumnus John S. The remaining $2 million of the award will provide for continuation of the Summer Institute for Writing in the Disciplines, now in its fourth year two new three-year positions, one for a coordinator of sophomore seminars and one for a coordinator of electronic communication and assessment and two state-of-the-art Knight seminar rooms that will be part of new construction that is part of the living-learning initiative on West Campus, Monroe said.Ĭornell's $1 million in matching funds will ensure in perpetuity the sophomore seminar coordinator position and the two Knight seminar rooms, he added. "These 28 sophomore seminars will create a new tier of Knight Institute course offerings beyond the First-Year Writing Seminars and in addition to the 30 Writing Seminars in the Majors courses which Cornell is also committed to funding as part of the agreement on an annual basis," Monroe said. Cornell has agreed in return to full funding of an additional 15 seminars per year beginning in 2004-05, for a total of 28 sophomore seminars per year beginning in 2006. That will fund five seminars, each with a limit of 15 students, in 2001-02 10 seminars in 2002-03 and 13 seminars in 2003-04, with funding for 13 seminars per year in perpetuity thereafter. Of the $5 million Knight award, $3 million will be used to endow a new Sophomore Writing Seminar Program. The grant will help fund sophomore writing seminars, residential writing mentors, technology enhancement and performance assessment, Rawlings said. "The Knight Writing Program has become a national model, and we are committed to preserving and enhancing its pre-eminence in the teaching of writing skills and in helping to replicate the program's successes at other institutions," he added. "I am particularly pleased that this award is tied to Cornell's undergraduate living and learning initiative, which is aimed at bringing the unique resources of a research university to bear more directly on the lives of its students. "We deeply appreciate Knight Foundation's generosity," said Cornell President Hunter Rawlings. The award, made as the foundation begins observing its 50th anniversary, is the largest approved by the board in 1999. This new grant cements Cornell's reputation as the place to go for those who care about the teaching and learning of writing." "Jack Knight would have liked that, because clear writers and good thinkers are more likely to be good citizens. "Cornell has produced a generation of students and teachers capable of expressing themselves creatively through the written word, whether they wind up being engineers, doctors or lawyers," Hodding Carter III, the Knight Foundation's president and CEO, said today (March 1, 2000). ![]() Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines, said Jonathan Monroe, director of the Knight Writing Program, professor of comparative literature and the George Reed Professor of Writing and Rhetoric at Cornell.Ĭornell has committed an additional $1 million in matching funds to the institute, Monroe said. The weather service said the storm could hit southern Guam around midday Wednesday, which is Tuesday evening in the mainland United States. The weather service said the storm was intensifying and warned of a “triple threat” of winds, torrential rains and life-threatening storm surge on Guam. Its center was about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southeast of Guam late Tuesday local time and was moving to the north-northwest, according to the weather service.
